Cerebral toxoplasmosis and cryptococcosis in HIV: a rare case resolved with alternative treatment

Cerebral toxoplasmosis and cryptococcosis are severe opportunistic infections of the central nervous system (CNS) in HIV patients. Toxoplasmosis is the most common CNS opportunistic infection in these patients, while cryptococcal meningitis, caused by Cryptococcus neoformans, affects 5-10 % of cases. Both conditions carry high mortality
if untreated, and their coexistence is rare, doubling the risk of fatal outcomes. We present the case of a 26-year-old man with bilateral paresis, visual impairment, bradyphasia, bradypsychia, and disorientation that in his diagnostic study he presented HIV positive serology, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) with cryptococcosis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for toxoplasmosis positive.
