Developing pleuritis or pleural empyema due to infections by Campylobacter is uncommon, although there have
been cases reported, mainly associated with periodontal disease, generally due to Campylobacter rectus and Campylobacter curvus, in patients with poor oral hygiene and in whom aspiration pneumonia had previously occurred. The case described below involves the formation of a pleural empyema in a patient with prior acute gastroenteritis caused by Campylobacter jejuni, an uncommon extraintestinal disease that has been described primarily in patients with immunological disorders (biologic drug therapy, hemodialysis, hematologic malignancies, etc.).
