Abstract

We present the case of an 84-year-old man with a high burden of vascular disease who, in the context of a situation of low output due to an intercurrent infectious process, the patient had an epigastric abdominal pain and upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The endoscopic study revealed the typical image of ‘black esophagus’, corresponding to acute esophageal necrosis. We review here the etiopathogenesis and the main treatment and prognostic implications of this rare but potentially fatal entity.
